The Four Levels of Consciousness – Which One Do You Spend Most Of Your Time In?

How we perceive the world around us is based on how we are feeling and  how we filter the information in that moment. The way that we filter information relates to the reference points we each have as a result of the experiences we have had in this and other lifetimes.

We can allow ourselves to perceive and experience our reality through life events, beliefs, patterns, programming, social conditioning, religious expectations, or cultural expectations for example. Or we can view it by what  we see within ourselves first, whilst knowing that our outer world is a reflection of our inner world.

Currently we as humans are navigating our way through healing old projections, patterns, programmes and conditioning which have limited us and stopped us having the awareness that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. As we move out of the materialistic way of being (3D) to a heart and soul-led way of being (5D) we need to dissolve and heal these limiting constructs so that we can fully experience our true selves.

There are 4 levels of consciousness that we are moving through at different times in our life, in our day indeed in an hour. These states of being relate to what we are experiencing in each moment and so how we view each situation/experience that we are navigating in that moment.

The four levels of consciousness are;

  • To Me (Victim Consciousness)
  • By Me (Responsibility Consciousness)
  • Through Me (Surrender Consciousness)
  • As Me  (Unity/Oneness Consciousness)

Whilst we will move through all of these states at various times in the day we will have one state that we are in most of the time. We need to move to being in ‘Through Me’ most of the time and then to move to ‘As Me’ as much as possible.

We need to understand which state we spend most time in, so that we can address the issues keeping us there and so move towards ‘Through Me’ and ‘As Me’. It is important that we are honest with ourselves when we look at which level of consciousness we stay in most of the time as without honesty we cannot address the issues, heal and create the change that will move us to the higher levels of consciousness and so into a state of flow where life happens with ease.

To Me (Victim Consciousness)

So looking first of all at ‘To Me’. When we are in this state we believe that ‘life happens to us’.  We look outside of ourselves for someone or something to blame for the current situation because it is too painful to go inward and delve into the origins of the pain, fear, anger or other emotions that we are using to cover up the trauma of our experiences and the fears that we are holding onto. When we  are in this state we have a victim mentality and ask ‘why me?’ Why is this happening to me ? Whose fault is it that this is happening to me?

We perceive ‘reality’ as something that is outside of our control. It’s easier to look outside of ourselves and point the finger of blame (remember when you point a finger at someone else there are 3 pointing back at you!) at someone else than to admit our mistakes and to admit that we created the situation. It’s easier to complain about the situation and then make excuses as to why we can’t change it than take responsibility and action.

In this level of consciousness there is no sense of responsibility or accountability and we react to what is happening in the world around us rather than go inward to discover what is creating the issue so that we can respond. We spend a lot of time justifying why things are the way they are and fault finding as we perceive that everything is happening to us.We blame what is happening around us for how we are feeling.

We aren’t willing to lead ourselves and leading others is perceived as a burden. When in ‘To Me’ we often believe that others are incompetent. Any happiness we experience is fleeting and we experience a sense of never having enough time. We also experience poverty consciousness or scarcity, never experiencing an abundance of anything and we don’t seem to have a sense of our true purpose.

We are working from a place of fear, rather than from a place of love. We are letting ego rule the roost rather than letting our heart and soul lead and so guide us with our intuition.

When we find ourselves in ‘To Me’ we never feel really happy because it is a  disempowering place to be.‘To Me’ puts us in a place of anxiety, worry and uncertainty. People in this level of consciousness are afraid of the unknown, afraid of taking risks and become stuck in negative thought patterns often going round and round in circles.

To free ourselves from ‘To Me’ we need to first stop blaming everyone else and then take responsibility for ourselves, our health and happiness. This is of course easier said than done as there may be many reasons for us being in a place of ‘To Me’.

Often when we are in a state of ‘To Me’ we are waiting for and expecting others to come and rescue us, however no one can rescue us, it is up to us to rescue ourselves by being willing to address the issues, do what is needed to heal, and so create change.

The cost of having the awareness that we can design our own life by moving into ‘By Me’ is responsibility. What this means is that when something is brought to our attention that needs addressing, such as a belief that no longer serves us, a behaviour that is damaging or a habit we need to stop, taking responsibility means taking action in order to address the issues.

It means being willing to take a look at ourselves first of all and acknowledge there is an issue and then do something to heal it and create the change that is needed for us to be able to move forward in a positive way.

For many it is easier to leave their head in the sand and continue projecting their issues away from themselves than it is to admit that they need to go inward and heal.

Taking personal responsibility takes courage as does being willing to embark on a journey of self-healing as healing is about long-term growth rather than quick fixes, it’s about understanding that it is not about instant results but sustained meaningful progress that allows us to create positive change within our world.

There are benefits to remaining in the ‘To Me’ state of consciousness which include; experiencing separateness due to a lack of purpose and so being excluded from any blame or from taking responsibility, channelling energy into drama and getting involved in others drama which creates an adrenaline  and dopamine high and being empathetic towards others, especially their pain and then trying to fight their corner.  These things all distract us from the need to go inward and look at what we need to address for ourselves.

By Me (Responsibility Consciousness)

So now we will take a look at ‘By Me’ which is where we recognise that we create what we want, so we take action rather than just hoping something will just appear. We react to external things and our own personal experiences from a place of control and responsibility. We allow ego to lead as it believes (wrongly) that it has control over our lives and so makes things happen. At this level of consciousness  we have the mentality that if I am to have the life I want, it will happen ‘By Me’.

Here the perspective has shifted from victim to feeling empowered to take action because we have assumed responsibility for ourselves, our health and happiness. We live life from a sense of personal empowerment, including appreciation and curiosity. Our leading belief is that we create our own reality. We often create problems to give us a sense of purpose  and to learn from the problems by solving them.

The questions that we tend to ask at this level are What can I learn? What do I want to create?

This level is still ego-led and there is a lack of trust in the intuition. We may find we think we have to work hard to get fulfilment and so we can end up putting a lot of pressure on ourselves. Here we will take responsibility for self-leadership focussing on what skills we need to master to achieve our purpose. We believe that happiness and a sense of purpose are both a choice that we decide and make/create.

The benefits of this level of consciousness include personal responsibility and empowerment and we tend to focus on clarity so that we can define our wants and desires.

Its better than To Me as we are taking responsibility and feeling empowered to take action, however this level of consciousness is still rooted in fear and is ego-led!

To move from By Me to Through Me we need to give up the need for control and learn to embrace uncertainty so that we move into the present moment.

Through Me (Surrender Consciousness which moves us into a state of flow)

This level of consciousness is the first one where we are operating from a place of love rather than a place of fear. We understand that life happens ‘Through Me’. To be able to experience this fully we need to let go of the negative states of fear and blame and move from allowing our ego to lead into a heart and soul-led way of being. To experience the state of  ‘Through Me’ we need to surrender the need to control what is happening in our lives as we come to the realisation that we are a co-creator of our lives and are more than our physical body. We are a conduit for spirit and so when we become the observer and have a positive outlook on what we want in our lives and trust that everything happening is for our highest good, we will step into flow and everything will flow through us.

It is when we are in this level of consciousness that we let go of outcomes and trust that the outcome we receive is the outcome that we need in that particular moment. When we move into flow, it is an effortless state where everything easily drops into place. Here we work with our intuition and find that synchronicity and serendipity happens bringing whatever we need and desire to us.

Giving up the need for control and embracing uncertainty allows us to flow with the river a bit more rather than going into panic because the river is twisting and turning in a way we didn’t expect.

Writers, artists and composers often talk about being in a state of flow when they create their best project as the ideas just flow through them without them needing to think about it.

Here we live in a state of certainty knowing we have nothing to overcome and nothing to defend, so we trust/have a deep knowing that our goals are going to be achieved effortlessly. We don’t get affected by drama. We are working with our intuition from a place of love and so it is heart and soul-led way of being. We trust that everything will work out as it needs to.

When we move into ‘Through Me’ we embrace responsibility and lead by example. We are happy most of the time, and are living in the present moment without any attachment. We recognise that there is unlimited possibility and move into a state of abundance in all areas of our lives.

Questions that we might ask in this level of consciousness are;

What do I need to know/do now (in this moment) to allow me to move forward? Is this for my highest good?

To then move from ‘Through Me’ to ‘As Me’ we need to give up the illusion of separation.

As Me (Unity/Oneness Consciousness)

This is the second higher level of consciousness where we are operating from a place of love and we feel connected to everyone and everything.  Here life happens ‘As Me”.

We experience unity conscious, understanding that there is no separation, everything and everyone is just an extension of ourselves, with their own unique experiences of life and their own expression.

This is a state of love, compassion and oneness which allows us to see the beauty in everything and feel grateful for the world around us. When we are in a state of oneness there is nothing that is lacking and we accept where we are and who we are. There is no right or wrong, everything just is.

We have an understanding that what we do to ourselves we do to others and what we do to others we do to ourselves.

Here we don’t have questions we just experience ‘knowingness’ as we operate from a place of love. There are no problems, just experiences that will play out as they need to. There is a sense of unlimited freedom and peace and we let go of focusing on our moods and thoughts and recognise that everything is energy.

When we are in ‘As Me’ we have a deep understanding of ourselves and others and we lead by example from a place of love.

Having an understanding of these different levels of consciousness helps us to have an awareness of where we are at any given moment in our lives. We need to be in a state of flow as much as possible so that we can then move into unity consciousness.

We all move through these different states of consciousness at different times, depending on what we are learning. What’s important is that we recognise when we are in the lower levels of consciousness so that we can address and heal what has moved us into the ego-led ways of being and  move ourselves back to being heart and soul-led.

As we move through the ascension process we are being encouraged to let go of and heal anything that is keeping us in the lower ego-led levels of consciousness so that we can move into a state of flow and unity.

We all have to experience the different levels of consciousness and as previously mentioned we move through all of them at different times and with different experiences. However, when we have an understanding of when we are allowing ego to lead and when we are being heart and soul-led, we can do what is needed to move/keep us in the heart and soul-led way of being.

Take the time to think about which level of consciousness you are spending most of your time in. If it is the ego-led levels, allow yourself to go inward and discover what it is that you need to address, heal and let go of to be able to move back into a heart and soul-led way of being. Essentially what you are doing when you look at your levels of consciousness is healing your relationship with yourself.
