I have recently been to the USA to visit family that I haven’t seen for a while. It was quite an adventure and a much needed complete break. One of the things that I have always found interesting is the Americans’ relationship with food.
If you go out to eat, the portions are huge and everyone asks for a box to take food home. I remember the first time I went out to the USA I found this very strange! People seem to eat left overs a lot from where they have been out.
Interestingly, one side of the family that I visited did a lot of home cooking, although making huge amounts and then freezing it and the other side of the family either had someone make food for them and deliver it or ate out.
What I found really interesting was when I was talking to one of my sister- in -laws she said to me that in her family ‘food equals love’ and that whatever happened they always made sure that everyone ate well.
It got me thinking about people who comfort eat and whether it happens because they equate food with love and yet when we over eat it leads to all sorts of health issues.
When I have been working with people I have intuited lots of different causes of weight issues, including having been starved in other lifetimes fro a variety of reasons, working on sugar plantations and becoming addicted to sugar, being rewarded for favours with sweet things such as honey. Indeed how many parents reward their children with sweets! Sugar is actually more addictive than cocaine and is in an awful lot of fast and convenience foods.
I’ve also found that carrying extra body fat can be to do with past lives where people have felt very vulnerable, perhaps with the opposite sex and so want to protect themselves or haven’t been able to nurture themselves properly and so have built up additional stores so that they have something to fall back on.
Whilst chatting to a friend we agreed that the phrase ‘food equals love ‘ has become distorted and should probably be ‘I feed my family with love’ .
When I was a child ( which isnt that long ago !) most mum’s stayed at home and looked after the home and did the cooking. I remember my father always having a vegetable patch which was lovingly tended in his spare time and which mum always went to for fresh veg each day. Food was cooked with love as women had time to focus on baking and cooking. I remember my grandmother would cook a stew on the hob for hours so that the meat was really tender. So the food that was available to people was filled with loving energies, even if they were short of food such as in the war years. These days everything is done for convenience and so meals are thrown together often by a very stressed parent who is trying to juggle, family, work and running a house.
Indeed stress is another big factor with excess body weight and this also links in to sleep deprivation, and dehydration, all of which can either make us burn too much body fat or store too much. It is only recently that I have really understood how these factors link together to affect our weight and our ability to lose the excess weight that we no longer need.
When food isnt filled with love, it isnt very nourishing and so we find ourselves looking for more. When we lovingly prepare a meal, it is far more nourishing for the people we are making it for as it is not only feeding our physical bodies but our soul as well. When we feel nourished on all levels, we ind that we no longer need to comfort eat.
So have a think about your relationship with food. The first step to changing it for the better is to acknowledge that there are issues and the next step is to cook lovingly prepared meals. If you are still struggling to lose weight then healing work needs to be done to clear whatever is causing you to hold onto the additional body fat, whether it is past life or stress related.
